The measure would require news publishers to disclose the use of AI in content creation and establish human review standards.
Lawmakers in the New York State Senate and Assembly introduced legislation requiring news publishers to disclose when they use AI to generate content and to implement human oversight of that material.
Senator Patricia Fahy (D) and Assemblymember Nily Rozic (D) introduced the “New York Fair News Act” as Senate Bill S8451 and Assembly Bill A8962. The legislation would require publishers to clearly disclose when AI is used to produce or substantially modify news content.
The bill would also require publishers to ensure that AI-generated content is subject to human review before publication. It outlines standards intended to promote transparency and accountability in the use of automated systems in journalism. The measure would only apply to news publishers operating in New York and would authorize enforcement by the state attorney general.
As of publication, S8451 and A8962 have been introduced and referred to their respective committees for consideration.
